Do you offer low cost spay/neuter program?Unfortunately, at this time Athens Animal Services does not offer low cost spay/neuter but below are resources that you can reach out to. The SNYP Program helps members of the Athens City community who otherwise cannot afford to have their pets spayed or neutered. This low cost spay/neuter program is financed by the Athens City Council to help prevent pet overpopulation. Interested individuals must come into the Limestone Veterinary Clinic on Monday or Tuesday (between 10am-12pm), to complete the SNYP application, make copies of required documentation and set up an appointment. To qualify for the SNYP program you must Be 18 years of age, the owner of the pet and live in Athens City Have proof of being on food stamps or possess an EBT card Have a valid driver's license or picture ID Provide official documentation with current address (utility bill, bank statement, phone bill, etc.) Cash payment for surgery **NOTE: Applicants can only spay/neuter 2 pet per year** Please contact their receptionist at (256) 233-1515 to learn more. What hours are you open?Monday thru Friday 9:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:00pm. We are closed for lunch daily from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. If you would like to meet any of our dogs, we do request that you make an appointment so that we can schedule a private yard for you to with the dog(s). This helps by allowing the dog(s) to meet in a less loud and distracting environment. Saturday and Sunday - Closed

How do I surrender my animal?Please fill out the correct form with as much information as possible, so that we can help you and your pet as best as possible. If you live within the Athens City limits, please fill out the form(s) below. Our intake coordinator will be in contact within 3-5 standard business days to schedule a turn in appointment date or to let you know where you are on the turn-in wait list. Once you are scheduled for a turn in appointment, you will need to bring the animal, photo identification (i.e. a driver's license) and proof of residency (i.e. current utility bill) and any vet records for your pet. Please understand that if you are a no show for your scheduled appointment, the kennel space will go to the next person on the waitlist.

Who do I contact to report a stray animal?Depending on where you located the stray animal you will need to call either: Athens City Animal Control at (256) 233-8700 Limestone County Animal Control at (256) 233-0111 You can also fill out a Found Animal Report on the homepage. If you need to surrender your pet, please if out an Owner Surrender Form in the FAQ section. Please call the shelter at (256) 771-7889 if you have any questions.

Is there a trial period with your adoptions?Yes, there is a two (2) week trial period when you adopt from Athens Limestone Animal Services. This trial period is to allow time for the animal to decompress and get acclimated with their new surroundings, people and other pets. If during the trial period, things do not go well, you may return the animal to the shelter for a full refund. If the animal is returned after the trial period, it is considered an owner turn-in and no refund will be issued.

What is the adoption fee?$170 for animals 5 months and under - Kitten/Puppy Plan $110 for animals 6+ months

What vetting is included?All of our cats are FIV/FeLV tested, up-to-date on the standard vaccines (FVCRP, Rabies and Leukemia), de-wormed and current on flea and tick prevention. Kittens under 5 months (or 5 lbs) will be placed on our Kitten Plan, which includes spay/neuter once the kitten is cleared for surgery. Kittens/cats over 5 months or 5 lbs, will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Felines can be micro-chipped upon request, and are registered with 24Petwatch. All our dogs are heartworm tested (at 6 months), up-to-date on Parvo, Distemper, Bordetella and Rabies shots, micro-chipped and current on heartworm preventative and flea/tick prevention. Puppies under 5 months will be placed on our Puppy Plan, which includes spay/neuter once the puppy is cleared for surgery. Dogs/puppies over 5 months (this may vary due to breed), will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Dogs/puppies are micro-chipped and registered with 24Petwatch

How can I adopt a pet from Athens Animal Services?You can start by looking at our adoptable animal pages on our website. If you find an animal you are interested in, the first step is to complete our adoption application to let us know. Once we receive your application, one of our dedicated team members will process it and be in contact to schedule a meet and greet for you and your potential new family member. This is an opportunity for you and the animal to get to know each other better. We believe in finding the best possible match for both the animal and the adopter, so we are here to guide you through the entire adoption process and answer any questions you may have.
